First, just as an FYI - For troubleshooting on SHP - you can post your questions, comments, etc on this XP Mode thread on SHP.

Now onto getting XP Mode on a Windows 7 Machine:

You can get it from here:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/wind ... -windows-7

Despite the note that states: "Make sure you're running Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate."

I have verified, with some tinkering it will also run on the Windows 7 Home (Premium) Edition.

The following will show how it's done.

Go to the Windows XP Mode Download page here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloa ... px?id=8002

You will need to download the "GenuineCheck.exe" - if you don't already have it - select "CONTINUE" on that page and it will prompt to download it. Launch that program and it will give you a validation code. Enter the code to proceed to the download.

It will show two files - just download: WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe

Launch and install.

Then download the Windows Virtual PC software (you will once again need to validate your copy of Windows) here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/downloa ... px?id=3702

Now ideally, this is all you have to do if you have Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate.

Additional Steps for Windows 7 Home (Premium):

Despite Microsoft claims that Windows XP Mode cannot run on Windows 7 Home Premium and Basic edition, the VHD (Virtual Hard Disk) of Windows XP Mode is installed to the following folder nonetheless: C:\Program Files\Windows XP Mode\

Navigate to the above folder.

Take ownership and grant full control permissions to the Windows XP Mode base.vhd file.

Right click on Windows XP Mode base.vhd file, then select Properties. Uncheck the Read-only opiton.

Start Windows Virtual PC from Start Menu (Start -> All Programs -> Windows Virtual PC -> Windows Virtual PC).

Click on Create Virtual Machine at the command bar.

Name the new virtual machine as Windows XP Mode or any other preferred name.

Continue the new virtual machine creation wizard, until “Add a virtual hard disk” window. Choose the Use an existing virtual hard disk option, then click Browse to select the location of Windows XP Mode VHD (e.g. C:\Program files\Windows XP Mode\Windows XP Mode base.vhd).

Finish the create new virtual machine wizard.

Windows XP Mode is now install on the Windows 7 system.

The downside is - the key provided with the Virtual Machine does not work if it's not Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate. This appears to mean it will only fully function for 30 days. See more information here: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/For ... 7itprovirt

For troubleshooting on SHP - you can post your questions, comments, etc on this XP Mode thread on SHP.

This step by step guide will be modified as needed.
