Titanic: Adventure Out of Time

Post by Collector » Tue Feb 04, 2014 5:24 pm

This is an experimental installer for the adventure game Titanic: Adventure Out of Time (MobyGames).

Though the game includes both a 16-bit and 32-bit executables, the installer was 16-bit to work on both win3x and Win9x systems, but will not work on modern x64 versions of Windows. This installer replaces the original 16-bit installer, so it will install on x64 systems.

Compatibility Issues Addressed:
The game would crash when it called a file browser dialog when saving or loading a saved game. The installer includes a compatibility patch I developed with the ACT package. The game also has color corruption problems, even with compatibility settings as long as the Windows Explorer shell is running. I wrote a game launcher that kills explorer, launches the game and then relaunches Explorer when the game exits.

I did not invest the time to look into making it run completely from the hard drive, so the CDs will be required for play. This is something I may revisit if there is enough demand. If you try it, please leave some feedback. It seems to work well on my system,
Edit: I found that the original AutoRun installer included a config utility. Since it is 16-bit, x64 users cannot change the default settings. I tracked down what this tool was doing and recreated it as a Win32 app. Just for funsies I also recreated the AutoRun itself. After having done this, I thought "in for a penny, in for a pound" and added a full HDD option to the installer. The above link now goes to the updated installer.

Tons of interest from me, only I don't own the game. I wish I did, because it sounds like something I'd enjoy. Hopefully GOG will get it sometime soon, as I know there are a lot of other people on there that want it.

I'd pick up the game - if I had copious amounts of free time. But I am currently returning back to playing some games I have not yet beat (Blue Force, CodeName: Iceman, QFGV, Les Manley 1 and 2, and replying Kyrania 1-3 as well). On top of writing, and doing the podcast (which is a HUGE, but very fun time sink).

I wonder if my old Mac saves will work with the Windows version. I'm pretty sure my CD is hybrid Win/Mac. This is one of many games I never finished.

As is mine. The easiest way to tell about the cross compatibility of the saves would be to install it and see.
