LB2 AUDBLAST.DRV - Floppy Version

Feeling like this game could be murder... literally? Well, come on in here for some extra detective work (and clues/hints/etc!) for the Laura Bow games (The Colonel's Bequest and The Dagger of Amon Ra).

LB2 AUDBLAST.DRV - Floppy Version

Post by Semi-Happy Partygoer » Fri Mar 22, 2019 2:46 am

I recently used the SHP installer for the floppy disk version, which updated the faulty AUDBLAST.DRV. Unfortunately, the revised one results in sound effects repeating indefinitely, such as the slamming of the Tribune door when Laura exits the building. Looking at the readme, it seems the updated driver was designed for the MPC release, which might explain the issue. Reverting back to the driver contained on the original disks, I indeed experienced the reported bug of only hearing the first digitized sound effect.

Is there a known AUDBLAST.DRV that works with the floppy version to play the digitized effects normally? If so, which SCI game might I be able to obtain it from? I tried the one that came with "Hoyle Classic Card Games" and that too resulted in repeated effects, but at a slightly different tempo than the one included with the SHP installer.

I can check (this weekend) if I had LB2 on disk and extracted... to test this also.

You have ID a mistake in the installer. That driver update is just for the CD version, not the floppy. the installer script was updating both. I have correted the error, but haven't uploaded the corrected installer, yet. You can easily fix it yourself by copying the AUDBLAST.DRV from your floppy and overwrite the one the installer added.

Thanks for the info. Yes, I did revert back to the driver contained on the disks, and that one does indeed only play the first digitized effect. Is there perhaps another workaround to the issue?

Replacing drivers in SCI games with ones from another game is... hit or miss. EQ1's interpreter is slightly later. Let me know if it works.

Lemme know if there's anything I can do... I do have the disk version (1.1)... so if there's any files I can toss at this to help, I'd be glad to do so.

The EQ1 driver didn't seem to work, but thanks for trying. I'm not too worried about it, but I'll keep experimenting as well just to see. The digital effects play back fine in ScummVM, but I'd be curious to see if I can get them to work properly through DOSBox.
