I am having somewhat of a similar problem, I have the latest version of DOSBox installed, downloaded the KQ5 installer (from the 1997 collection release, dic 2) with no problem, went to play the game and all I get is a black screen with broken audio in the background, game seems to be playing, but nothing is visible.

Downloaded the KQ6 installer also and same results except the audio is not broken.

Any ideas on what is going on? I am running Windows XP PRO. Thanks.

Uninstall everything. Make sure that you have the right installer for your game and start over again. Do not install on top of an earlier installation. When it asks about DOSBox, let it install.

well, still no luck, same results.

I have been using the default DOSBox configurations when prompted (large screen, no smoothing, etc.). I am assuming that does not matter.

This is the the 2nd collection release (1997) and for the second disc. Using newest version of DOSBox.

Any other ideas, any help would be appreciated, thanks.

I need to be able to tell what kind of file each file on the list is. You have your Windows set to hide extensions. This confuses what files are what, i.e. you can't tell the difference between "INSTALL.EXE", "INSTALL.BAT" or "INSTALL.SCR", etc. It can also be dangerous to not be able to tell the difference between a file that cause harm to your PC (.EXE, .COM, .VBS) with what looks like something harmless like an image file. You might download a file named "Pretty Picture.jpg.vbs" and on yout PC it would look like "Pretty Picture.jpg". Go to your Control Panel and open "Folder Option". Go to the "View" tab and uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" and repost the list of files in the folder.

I'm sorry that this is taking as many posts as it is to solve your problem, but I need to get some basic information to figure out what is going wrong for you. The actual fix may be easy, once I know what is going on.

Odd, everything seems to be there, Open the DOSBox.conf and the the RESOURCE.CFG files in Notepad and post the contents.

I can't see a single thing that is wrong with the game. Where is DOSBox installed? make a shortcut to DOSBox on your desktop and drop SIERRA.EXE from the game's folder onto it and let me know what happens.

bingo, that worked, the one thing I did notice different is that at the top of the DOSBox screen, when I was having problems, the first number was 10000, now when dropping sierra.exe on the desktop icon and running the program it says 3000, what does that all mean?

DOSBox is currently saved under c:\program files\DOSBox

one other thing I noticed, speech works in kq5 but not in kq6, only music plays in kq6, anything I can do to fix that, thanks for the help.

By dropping it on the shortcut it is using the default config file, not the one that was made for the game, so it is going too slow. What is the exact location of DOSBox?

the best I can tell DOSBox is located at:

C:\Program Files\DOSBox

sound correct or should it be outside of the program files subdirectory?

Everything looks as it should. It probably won't make much of a difference, but try this updated config utility.
Attachment:
Conf.exe [266.98 KiB]
Downloaded 11 times

If that doesn't help, try different output options in the DOSBox.conf. Valid options are: surface, overlay, opengl, openglnb and ddraw. The default is surface, but this causes problems of color corruption with full screen on Vista/Win7, so I use overlay with my installers.
