No Music or Speech in King's Quest V DOS!

Post by SierraFan » Sat Aug 28, 2021 4:53 pm

I was able to get KQ I-IV up and running, now I'm having a problem with KQ V with no Music or Speech in DOSBox-Optionals. I get the Sound FX, but nothing else. What do you all think might be the problem? I've included the KQ5.BAT, Resource.CFG and the Config File for DOSBox-Optionals for analysis. Any Help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

It'd be in the resource.cfg (others more well versed can verify that's where the issue would be if there is one).
Resource.cfg wrote: videoDrv = VGA320.DRV
soundDrv=ADL.DRV
audioDrv=AUDBLAST.DRV
joyDrv = NO
kbdDrv = IBMKBD.DRV
mouseDrv = STDMOUSE.DRV
memoryDrv = NO
mode = real
minHunk = 206k
directory = \SIERRA\KQ5D
audio=.\
So, assuming that the ADL.DRV and the AUDBLAST.DRV are both present -

The next thing would be the directory of where it thinks the audio is.

So when I look how I have KQ5 configured for Resource.CFG
videoDrv = VGA320.DRV
soundDrv = MT32.DRV
audioDrv = AUDBLAST.DRV
joyDrv = NO
kbdDrv = IBMKBD.DRV
mouseDrv = STDMOUSE.DRV
memoryDrv = ARM.DRV
mode = real
minHunk = 206K
directory = \SIERRA\kq5
And I hear music and voice.

Now mine isn't set to run with Tandy when I try - so I downloaded MusicallyInspired JR.ZIP - but when I run set up I get:

FATAL ERROR: Can't find text entry for 'JR.DRV'
This can be caused by a missing INSTALL.TXT or INSTALL.HLP file.
Module: J:TEXTDICT.CPPP(203)
Press ESC to abort...

So I am not able to mimic your settings - but if you run the INSTALL and select something else - does it play music?
If so, you know something may be wrong with how KQ5 is reading that JR.DRV file.

Why not just use the new installers?

I have the DOSBox config setup to use SB16/OPL for Audio and VGA/SVGA for Video. Like you said there must be something wrong with the way that RESOURCE.CFG is set up.

Did you try different settings - just to see if you hear sounds from the game?

The issue I was having must have been down to human error, sorry about that. Only thing now is to set it up to where I don't need the disc for audio.

Ah yes! So it was calling for the CD in the CDROM drive and not finding it.

I assumed that might be the case because where your RESOURCE.CFG looked different than mine was where it said:
audio=.\
Which none of mine have.

Is it possible to play directly from the games' folder and not need the CD for audio? The version used is the King's Quest Collection 2 version if that helps?

Yes. That's what Collector was talking about in this post.

He has a metric ton of installers for just about every Sierra game - and ye can see by going to "K" - you can see the King's Quest stuff:
http://sierrahelp.com/Games/GameHelp.html#K

Including the various collections -
http://sierrahelp.com/Games/KingsQuest/ ... nHelp.html
http://sierrahelp.com/Games/KingsQuest/ ... sHelp.html
http://sierrahelp.com/Games/KingsQuest/ ... nHelp.html

All with handy screenshots to ensure you're referencing the right collection.

Now would be a good time to thank the endless effort Collector puts into making these. :D

Thank you, Collector. :D

I perused the help file for King’s Quest V and now know what to do to play without needing to have the disc for audio. Thank you Collector for maintaining this great site for Sierra fans such as Tawmis and myself. Thank you all and have a great rest of your day. 🙂👍👍

Sometimes there is value in being that kid that takes clocks apart to see how they work. Try the installer and tinker with the installation to see how I did it.

I might have to since I’m encountering a weird Sound Blaster bug in DOSBox-Optionals. It’s causing the audio to distort when moving the mouse in the games I’ve tested so far. It’s a very odd one as I don’t recall them doing that in the stock version of DOSBox. Thank you and have a wonderful day. 👍👍
