In Space No One Can Hear You Clean, er, Scream. But if you post in this forum about Space Quest - someone's sure to hear you. I think. Try it, anyway!

There's an issue where the audio in the game is so loud (no matter if I turn it down) that it sounds crackly and distorted. Any ideas?

Nevermind. Just dawned on me to run the update install file for sound and it's fixed (after you recommended it for King's Quest).
Duh. Me.

Also, be sure to use the build of DOSBox that Qbix made for me for SQ6.

Is that all in the patch? So if I use the start menu/Sierra launches - it loads that one, no?

The launcher won't work. Use the individual shortcuts in the start menu for each game. The build of DOSBox that Qbix gave me is just the DOSBox executable. Unzip it into your DOSBox-0.70 folder, overwriting DOSBox.exe.
