GoG and DRM and All Of That.

I think you're really overstating the case here. GOG isn't a consumer advocacy group. It's a for-profit store. It's "whole purpose" is to make money, and being able to advertise as being DRM-free is just a means to that end. You mentioned online multiplayer, but that just shows how GOG's anti-DRM policy really isn't that absolute. Some GOG games apparently require an active Internet connection even for LAN games. Some GOG games provide you with a unique serial key that's required for online play. That is, there's a system that ensures that, in order for multiple people to play the game, they each have to buy a copy, and merely pirating the installer isn't enough. That's what DRM is.

Now, there are several arguments that could be made for why this is okay: Maybe that form of DRM is relatively benign (it's certainly less intrusive and less likely to lock legitimate owners out of their game than other kinds). Maybe you're not a pirate, so your legitimate copy works just fine. Maybe you only play single-player games, so the ones you play really are completely DRM-free. Maybe some sort of anti-piracy measure is necessary, or at least understandable, for multiplayer games. Maybe, because this sort of system is server-side, GOG just doesn't have any means to change it. Maybe only the single-player content really counts. Maybe having DRM-free single player content is better than not having DRM-free access to the game at all.

What I don't think you can say, however, is that GOG games are absolutely, completely DRM-free.

I'm not saying that GOG is a "DRM-fest" or that they have more DRM than any alternatives (there are certainly games that have DRM on Steam but not on GOG), but I am saying that they're not quite as ideologically pure on the DRM front as you indicate.

(I'm no fan of GOG, but it's not because of DRM.)

I never said you were saying anything. I don't know why you're arguing with me.

*shrug*. This topic wasn't about DRM, but you decided to make a reply saying, in part, that "GOG's whole purpose is anti-DRM. No game on GOG will ever have DRM. Ever."

Why aren't you a fan of GOG anyway?

They have history of cozying up to to the worst people and denigrating marginalized people:
  • Their forums host pro-Gamergate threads, some with thousands of replies.
  • They had a big partnership with Totalbiscuit, a harasser who had tried to legitimize GG.
  • Then, this July, they advertised Postal 2: Paradise Lost with a pro-GG screenshot of the game (a tombstone with "Games Journalism // Committed suicide // Aug 28 2014", being urinated on). They deleted this and posted this apology.
  • In August, the Cyberpunk 2077 account tweeted the transphobic "did just you assume their gender" meme. This wasn't tied to the GOG brand in particular, but both GOG and CD Projekt Red (the developer of Cyberpunk 2077) are owned by the same company. They deleted that and posted this nonpology.
  • Then, in October, the GOG account made a tweet that deliberately appropriated the #WontBeErased hashtag, created by trans people in response to the current US efforts to define them out of existence and remove their rights, in order to advertise their store. The exact tweet was "Classic PC games #WontBeErased on our watch. Yeah, how's that for some use of hashtags?". They then deleted that and posted this even worse nonpology.
  • Those tweets are now full of replies of people saying they had nothing to apologize for, praising the "jokes", and attacking the people the people affected. This is the fanbase they've cultivated, and they're not doing anything to discourage it.
So while I do have basically positive views of the GOG service, and I respect their efforts to both combat DRM and preserve old games, I don't think the people running it are good people. Maybe they really agree with the GGers and transphobes, but even if not, they're certainly making them think that they agree with them.

(Just to be clear, by saying this, I'm not saying that Valve is good in comparison. They're also terrible. I'm not calling for a boycott, either, both because individual boycotts are meaningless and because trying to boycott everything run by terrible people or by people who do terrible things would probably leave you with nothing at all.)

I've split this from Rath's post, as it has evolved into something that's got nothing to do with his question.

Ah. Never mind I'm out. Got no time or energy for conversations about "social justice."

Have a good one.
