My playthrough

Post by notbobsmith » Fri Nov 09, 2018 6:45 pm

I am making steady progress. Day 3 right now. I am playing the floppy version at this time. For some reason, this game just isn't doing it for me. It's not bad, but I just don't find it particularly funny or whimsical or... anything really. Everything sort of just falls flat for me. I realize that I'm not the target demographic anymore, but I'm not completely without a sense of humor. I think it could use an infusion of Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy or something.

The other thing that is off-putting is the user interface. My only other experience with a Dynamix adventure game is Rise of the Dragon and it just feels really cumbersome in comparison to Sierra's. I'm willing to bet that everyone who has ever played Rise of the Dragon didn't put their clothes on their first time playing. :) Clicking on the character brings up the inventory. To use an item you "float" the item out of the window. You have to drag a new item onto the character to put it in inventory. Esc brings up the control menu. Right-click to cycle through action icons. I know that part of it is just experience with Sierra's interface, but here everything seems to require an added step or two.

The game is also on a timer like Rise of the Dragon. I'm not sure how that will work out. I remember that with RotD, if you are very quick with doing things, you end up having to just wait through a whole day near the end because there is nothing for you to do. I don't really think that it's a very good game design. It leaves you wondering if you haven't done something to advance the plot.

I'd say more like an infusion of Josh Mandel or Al Lowe.

Oh, it's not because you're not the demographic anymore... That's exactly how I felt when I first played Willy way back in the day too. And when I tried to replay it a few years back, it's how I still felt.

Something's missing from that game to give it any... charm.

That also works.

I was searching for a word that best sums up what it is missing. "Charm" is probably the best one.

And hence why I say Josh Mandel. KQ1SCI was his baby and is probably one of the most charming of the KQ games.

I am oddly... stuck. It's day 4 and I am in the guard's office. It "odd" because it seems like I am very limited by what I can do. I can't leave the office, meaning that the solution is with what I have in inventory and what is in the office. It seems like I should have stumbled across the solution by now. This does seem to be a pattern with the game. Every once in a while it backs you into a corner and you have to find the way out. And it gives you red herrings where you think you solved it but you haven't. Still working on it. So far these puzzles have been solvable with what I have. I don't think I'm missing anything.

Got it. Strange solution that I only got by trying random things. Note to self: don't get too hung up on the Red Herring solution.

I thought about this... and I think I figured it out.

Willy Beamish reminds me of Dennis the Menace.

Like it's supposed to be... funny... cute at times... but it simply isn't.

No offense to anyone who like Dennis the Menace, but I never understood the appeal of that comic strip.

Given its release in the early '90s, I was thinking that they were trying to be The Simpsons with Willy as Bart. Only they failed and didn't go far enough with the familial dysfunction and pointed satire. I guess Dennis the Menace fits. It's been ages since I read the strip so I don't remember how it went. I think my local paper had it at some point, but I think it disappeared in favor of other strips. And this was probably back in the '80s. But as I recall, he's a troublemaker without being malicious, so I guess that works. But you are right. Willy Beamish is trying to be funny or cute, but it just doesn't work.

 I remember that about RotD. I never finished that game - just couldn't be bothered. It was so ... slow.

As for Willy Beamish ... meh. I can't remember any of it after about day 4. I tried playing it in the Win9x days and couldn't finish it, then tried it again a year or two ago and just gave up.

I thought it was cute, but not very clever.
