Beyond a Steel Sky

Post by DeadPoolX » Thu Feb 20, 2020 3:52 pm

No, I didn't mean Beneath a Steel Sky. That game is free on GOG.

I'm talking about the sequel that's being developed (and published) by the same company that made the original. It's called Beyond a Steel Sky and it looks like it'll eventually be available on Steam. No word on whether or not it'll come to GOG, but given that it's an adventure game, it probably will at some point.

So what is Beyond a Steel Sky? Well, going by the text on the Steam page, here's the information available so far:
From Charles Cecil, creator of the Broken Sword series, with art direction by Dave Gibbons, legendary comic book artist behind ‘Watchmen’, comes ‘Beyond a Steel Sky’, the long awaited sequel to the cult classic ‘Beneath a Steel Sky’.

You are Robert Foster. A child has been abducted in a brutal attack. You have vowed to bring him home. But the trail has led you from your community of desert wasteland dwellers, to Union City, one of the last remaining mega-cities in a world ravaged by shattering wars, and political meltdown.

Fortified and impenetrable, it is a utopia in which people live happily under the surveillance and control of a benign AI. But all is far from what it seems...

‘Beyond a Steel Sky’ is a dramatic, humorous, cyberpunk thriller in which engaging puzzles drive a fast-paced narrative set in a dynamic gameworld that responds to – and is subverted by – the player’s actions.

Features:
The World
An adventure set within a dynamic world, populated by willful characters driven by motivations that the player can subvert. In combination with a unique hacking tool, multiple solutions to puzzles emerge from player choices.

The Story
Unravel dark conspiracies, defeat a terrifying antagonist in this dramatic, humorous, cyberpunk thriller, which explores contemporary themes: social control, AI, and total surveillance.

The puzzles
Intelligent puzzles are interwoven with an intriguing dramatic narrative to deliver a compelling gameplay experience.

The Look
A beautifully detailed, comic-book styled world, from the mind of legendary comic artist Dave Gibbons.
From all indications, this is shaping up to be a real adventure game made for a 2020 audience (which explains controller use in addition to KB+M), while at the same time attempting to appease classic fans. No word on other details, such as if an at-will manual saving game mechanic is present. Hopefully it is, but other recent adventure games (like Dreamfall: Chapters, Syberia 3, the newer King's Quest, and nearly all of TellTale's games) have opted for checkpoint saves, so it's anybody's guess.

I have Beneath a Steel Sky (free, as you said, from GoG), but I've actually never played it.

Is it any good?

I know we had disagreed about this way back when; but these days, I am simply too old and don't always have the time to wait for a check point; so I am fully on board with the idea of manual saves.

No idea. I haven't played it either. I've been meaning to for a long time, but with all the distractions around (not the least of which includes a constant influx of new games), playing a 26 year-old game just isn't that high on my "to-do list."

We're on the same page. I've not heard anything that makes me want to play it.

Did you read the graphic novel that I linked to that originally came with the game?

I did. ;) I also played the first two Broken Sword games; they're pretty good.

I've heard of BaSS, of course, but never played it. It looks worth a try. :)

I did. I was surprised at the quality of the comic. Usually video game comics don't have "Marvel Quality" comics.

That's Steve Ince's work, the lead artist for BASS. He is in my FB friends list. Nice guy. Here is a portrait of Bowie by him.

I definitely feel like he must have some comic book experience.

Here is a painting by Steve Ince for a test to join Revolution games. It is a scene from BaSS.
