Game Specific Bugs

There are a couple of bugs the game has that are not speed dependent.

Problem - Graphics clipping:
With ATI Radeon graphics cards, some users might experience some clipping (this is a known issue with this card and happens under any version of windows).

Solution:
Run Gabriel Knight III in software mode.

Problem - Game won't run:
Trouble Running Gabriel Knight 3

Solution:
Copy the "day123.brn" file from disc 2 into the data folder in the game's installed folder on the harddrive. The file on disk 1 seems to be corrupted on some copies of the game. It may help to copy all .brn files from disc 2 to the installed folder. Note: The New SHP Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of The Sacred, Blood of The Damned Installer will do this for you automatically.

Problem - Game Locks up (Sidney, Day 2 5pm):
On day 2, 5:00 pm playing as Grace, the game freezes up when using Sidney. The freezing happens when: the analyzation starts with sound, but graphics don't appear. After a while the sounds stop and the game just stops there showing the red wait icon.

Solution:
The issue here is a codec conflict with FFDShow. Removing the FFD Show codec pack fixes the problem. If this does not help, try uninstalling any installed big codec packs.

Tips

Tip - Play Gabriel Knight 3 in 1280x1024 Resolution:
Create a shortcut (or run from the windows command line) and modify it to:

Gk3.exe -width 1280 -height 1024

Note: Some of the 2D screens (sidney/inventory/map) may not work correctly, because the art is only up to 1024x768.

Gabriel Knight III& XP

Mostly, Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of The Sacred, Blood of The Damned' will run on modern Windows, but there are a few issues that may arrise. Here are the most common problems.

Problem - GK3.EXE "not a valid win32" Program:
When trying to run Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned, Windows gave one user the error on GK3.EXE "not a valid win32" program. Reinstalling the game, using Compatibility mode on the SETUP GK3.EXE allows the game to run

Solution 1 (prefered):
Use the New SHP Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of The Sacred, Blood of The Damned Installer.

Solution 2:
Run SETUP with Compatibility mode on. ON. However, DO NOT run the game itself in Compatibility mode. Leave it OFF to run the game.

Problem - Invalid Directory:
When running the game, you might receive the error "invalid directory". It does not specify what the invalid directory is. Moreover, the game asks to "insert disk 1" which is in the drive already. It does not appear to know where the CD drive is located. Usually this is because the Registry has the incorrect information. Under XP and higher, the registry may have correct information, but still give this error.

The solution for both problems above seems to be to run SETUP with COMPATIBILITY ON. However, DO NOT run the game itself in compatibility mode. Leave compatibility OFF to run the game.

Problem - "Unrecognized Fatal Exception" in GK3:
If you're having problems with this error and you're using XP, there are two things you can do:

  1. Copy day1.brn, day2.brn, day3.brn, day23.brn and day123.brn from the Data folder on the CDs to the Data folder of your GK3 installation (Note: The New SHP Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of The Sacred, Blood of The Damned Installer will do this for you automatically).

  2. You may have to rename a file called mpeg2dmx.ax located in your windows\system32 folder. Rename it to mp3g2dmx.old. Rename it back when done playing. This batch file will do this automatically. Unzip it into your GK3 folder. Use it every time to start GK3 (from dpolsrod on the VU Games Community Forums). Note: The New SHP Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of The Sacred, Blood of The Damned Installer includes this batch file.
